Graduate stories

Advice and first-hand accounts of life as a graduate member of Engineers Ireland.

John Smyth, Mechanical Design Engineer, Arup

John Smyth

I graduated with an honours degree in Energy Engineering from UCC in 2017 and a MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering from WIT in 2018. Since then I have been working in Arup’s Cork office as part of the mechanical and energy engineering teams.

Before joining Arup, I worked as an energy engineer with 3CEA, a regional energy agency, providing energy management services, energy auditing and energy efficient design consultation to public bodies and communities.

Rinnell Mendoza, Senior Technology Transfer Engineer, DePuy Synthes

Rinnell

My name is Rinnell Mendoza, and I graduated with a B.E.(Hons) in Biomedical Engineering from NUIG in 2017. During this time I completed 8 months of placement with DePuy Synthes, Companies of Johnson & Johnson, where I was exposed to different areas of the medical device industry.

My first job after college was as a Manufacturing Engineer with Stryker and from there I have worked in various Engineering and Quality roles with other multinational companies including Merck Millipore and Boston Scientific.

Currently, I am a Senior Technology Transfer Engineer in DePuy Synthes working on the new product introduction of 3D and hybrid medical devices.

Kate Scally, Process Engineer, Pfizer

Kate Scally

My name is Kate Scally and I am a process engineer from Douglas, Co. Cork. I graduated from UCC in 2019 with a BE(Hons) in Process and Chemical Engineering. I completed my third year placement in DePuy Synthes in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork and returned there after I graduated for the Johnson and Johnson Campus Ireland Graduate Programme from 2019-2021. Through the course of this programme I completed two rotations; one in automation and the other in process engineering. During this time I also completed a Level 9 CPD certificate in Professional Engineering from TUD and a level 9 certificate in Intelligent Manufacturing Systems from MTU.

In early 2021 I started working in Thermo Fisher Scientific in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork as a process engineer in process development and manufacturing science and technology for Thermo Fisher’s large scale consumer healthcare manufacturing facility. I also got the fantastic opportunity for 5 months to be the interim operations team lead for the manufacturing facility; developing key leadership and management skills. I have also recently secured a role in Pfizer, Ringaskiddy as a production supervisor; a role which I am due to start in August 2022.

Louise Campion, Project Engineer, RPS

Louise Campion 300x

I graduated with a BSc (hons) and ME in structural engineering with architecture from UCD, in 2010 and 2012 respectively, and recently completed a post-graduate certificate in environmental sustainability.

Currently, my primary focus is on my role as technical co-ordinator of the European Green Capital Award, an initiative of the European Commission, for which RPS is the secretariat.

Other projects which I have worked on include renewable district heating systems, the strategic environmental assessment of the National Climate Change Mitigation Plan, a variety of contaminated land remediation strategies and environmental constraints studies for road development schemes.

Alison Delahunty, Project Engineer, RPS

Alison-Delahunty

I studied civil & environmental engineering (Level 8) at University College Cork (UCC) from 2008-2012. My engineering career commenced in Malachy Walsh and Partners (MWP), primarily as a structural engineer, from 2012-2015.

My interest in geotechnics was piqued while working in MWP and I enrolled in a master’s of soil mechanics (Level 9) at the Imperial College of London in 2014. I enrolled on a part-time basis and completed the course in 2016. Prior to completing it, I joined RPS where I have been a member of the geotechnics team since 2015.

Here I have had the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects. I am currently working on the conceptual model for a contaminated land site, the earthworks design for a local access road and the geotechnical design report for a cable stay bridge.

Kieran Garvey, Associate, RPS

When it came to picking my subjects for the Leaving Certificate cycle, long before the CAO crunch time, I knew I enjoyed physics, chemistry and maths. I also enjoyed technical drawing, so to me, a career in engineering seemed to pull aspects of all these together.
