Marta Val Escudero, the tools, models and methods manager at EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid, has been awarded the 2025 ESIG Excellence Award for outstanding contributions to the renewable energy industry.

The Excellence Awards by the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG), is an annual programme which recognises energy professionals from around the world for their accomplishments toward the planning, operation and advancement of energy systems, in ways that are economic and sustainable.

Enhanced modelling and simulation capabilities

Val Escudero has been acknowledged for her work in dynamic modelling, simulation tools and analysis methods for modern power systems. This work focuses on the importance of enhanced modelling and simulation capabilities for the secure and reliable operation of the all-island power system in the transition towards net zero.

Val Escudero, said: “EirGrid is playing a central role in Ireland’s efforts to reduce emissions and achieve our climate goals. Involvement with organisations, such as ESIG, ensures we have access to the best cutting-edge research and knowledge from across the globe.”

“This award is a great recognition of the work we at EirGrid do, as we work to ensure 80% of Ireland’s electricity comes from renewable sources, as per government targets and places Ireland right at the heart of power system development globally.”

Julia Matevosyan, associate director, chief engineer at ESIG, said: “This recognition highlights Marta’s ongoing dedication to driving positive change and supporting an Irish and global transition to a cleaner energy future.

'Outstanding and tireless industry leader'

“She is an outstanding and tireless industry leader focusing on energy transition and facilitating the secure integration of high levels of non-synchronous renewable generation via the development of new decision support tools and enhanced stability analysis capabilities for real-time operations.

"Marta is an active participant in numerous industry working groups and is continuously sharing her expertise through tutorials and numerous scientific papers at international conferences and journals.”

Val Escudero is also the current chair of the Power System Technical Performance Study Committee with CIGRE, a global non-profit, committed to the creation and sharing of power system expertise.

In its role as transmission system operator, EirGrid is aiming to transform the electricity grid to make it renewable-ready, in line with Ireland’s Climate Action Plan commitments.
