A new training course on rainwater management – Masterclass: Rainwater Management Planning, an online classroom on Friday, November 8, at 9.30am –has been developed to address the growing need for a sustainable approach, particularly in urbanised areas affected by flooding and poor water quality in urban streams and rivers.
Nature-based sustainable drainage features
There is a clear directive within the National Planning Framework, the River Basin Management Plans, Climate Action Plans, Irish specific design guides such as DMURS, and various development plans throughout Ireland; to use nature-based sustainable drainage features as a primary method of managing rainwater.
A Rainwater Management Plan (RMP) is a ‘plan led’ appraisal of a settlement which identifies preferred nature based solutions for managing rainwater and surface water run-off.
Better understanding of rainwater management will assist in future plan-making. The need for a long-term strategic approach, which is plan led, will ensure that we can better plan future development and make our existing urban areas more climate resilient.
A new training course on rainwater management has been developed to address the growing need for a sustainable approach, particularly in urbanised areas affected by flooding and poor water quality in urban streams and rivers.
The course is designed for local authorities, urban planning, engineering, environmental engineering, as well as individuals interested in sustainable rainwater management practices.
The course follows hotly on the heels of the National Strategy for the ‘Nature Based Management of Urban Rainwater and Urban Surface Water Discharges’ and ‘Rainwater Management Plan – Guidance for Local Authorities’, both of which were published in May 2024.
Course overview
The course will:
- Explain the issues the rainwater management plan is trying to address;
- Outline the types of data that may be used to inform a rainwater management plan and the outputs that should be anticipated, including requirements for hydraulic modelling and stakeholder engagement;
- Consider the rainwater management plan process drawing from the experience of completed rainwater management plans.
This course empowers participants with practical skills and knowledge to lead innovative rainwater management strategies. With the rising challenges of urbanisation and climate change, rainwater management is crucial to resilient towns and cities and sustainable communities.
