As Ireland pushes forward with ambitious climate goals, the need for qualified BER Assessors has surged. There has never been a better time to qualify as one.

Growing demand for BER assessments

Ireland is committed to achieving a significant reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, with a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of this strategy, the government has introduced strict energy efficiency standards for buildings.

Every property being sold, rented, or undergoing major renovations must have a BER certificate. This rates the energy performance of a building on a scale from A to G.

This growing emphasis on energy efficiency has led to a rising demand for BER dwelling assessors. The construction industry, estate agents, and private homeowners are increasingly seeking professional assessments to comply with regulations and enhance property values.

Career opportunities

With the expanding need for energy assessments and the government’s commitment to push for greener buildings demand is especially buoyant in new builds, retrofitting projects, and large commercial properties.

Additionally, the flexibility of the role allows a BER Assessor to operate as an independent contractor or as part of an established consultancy agency. This independence allows a BER Assessor to manage their own schedule, choose their clients, and scale this service as they see fit. This qualification offers a level of autonomy.

Contributing to Ireland’s climate goals

A BER Assessor ensures that buildings meet energy efficiency standards, helping to reduce the country’s overall carbon footprint. This directly positively impacts on combating climate change.

Access to training and certification

Becoming a BER Assessor has never been easier thanks to the availability of comprehensive training programs. These courses equip the learner with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct accurate and thorough assessments. Upon successful completion of the part-time, online training, you can become registered with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the governing body for BER Assessors.

Government incentives and support

The government is heavily invested in promoting energy efficiency, and this is reflected in the regulatory and financial incentives available to both homeowners and professionals in the industry.

Grants and subsidies are available for retrofitting projects, many of which require a BER assessment. This creates a steady stream of work for assessors, as property owners seek to take advantage of these government programs.

Kildare Wicklow Education and Training Board (KWETB)

Through the Skills To Advance (STA) initiative, funded by the government, KWETB can provide this training to those employed in the construction and related sectors, at no cost to the learner.

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will gain a Building Energy Rating Assessment qualification that allows for registration with SEAI to become a BER Assessor. The courses runs over six weeks, one day per week over four weeks with another day of practical assessments in Dublin following by a terminal online assessment.
