Three courses within the College of Science at NUI Galway may offer engineers the opportunity to return to college and develop their careers in these areas. Each course is multidisciplinary and relevant for engineers today. Depending on your interest, there are a suite of options available to you.
MSc Environmental Leadership, full time, with Ryan Institute
This is the newest addition to the list of courses available at NUIG. This MSc will equip graduates with an advanced level of knowledge and problem-solving, management and communication skills in key areas relevant to the environment, marine and energy sectors.
It will equip them with a capacity and capability for environmental leadership relevant to their career trajectory. It provides training in governance, management and communication, relevant to the environmental, marine and energy sectors will provide graduates with the competences to obtain employment in research, policy development or management.
The course has a focus on cross-sector skills and competences that can be transferred from one occupational area to another. Modules taught include Natural Resource Governance, Environmental Problems & Solutions, Project Management, Communicating Science & Research, as well as a range of optional subjects.

MSc Biodiversity and Land Use Planning blended learning, modular options available
The MSc in Biodiversity and Land Use Planning has just been revised and is now available on a modular basis which means that individual modules can be taken individually either as a once off or to gradually add up to an MSc qualification.
This blended learning course aims to provide participants with crucial skills, knowledge and experience that are needed to pursue successful careers in managing biodiversity resources sustainably while complying with international legislation. It is the only course in Ireland offering modules on Environmental Impact Assessment, Appropriate Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment and Invasive Species.
The course is devoted to formal scientific and policy coursework delivered in a blended learning format over two years, comprising a mixture of face-to-face contact (approximately 12–15 hours per module) in addition to private study combined with e-tutorial on-line support.

MSc Sustainable Resource Management: Policy and Practice, with University of Limerick
The MSc in Sustainable Resource Management: Policy and Practice combines fieldwork, on site group learning and individual assessments of sustainable policy and practice. It builds on the strengths of NUIG and UL to integrate health and environment, nature conservation and mitigation measures, assess ecological footprints, resource efficiency and life cycle analysis.
It is a fulltime course, and fieldtrips vary from day long activities within Ireland to several days investigating sustainable buildings and practices elsewhere in Europe. Taught modules are delivered in Semester 1 at NUI Galway, and Semester 2 at UL.
The latter part of Semester 2 is spent undertaking an individual research project, which can be an application of any aspect of the course. Work based projects where relevant may be considered.
