A remarkable 3,000-sq-ft coastal self-build home in Co Antrim has opted for Grant to design and supply its highly efficient integrated heating system, specifically tailored to provide efficient space heating and hot water.
The timber-frame home which was designed by 2020 architects and features stunning high ceilings, and large windows to take in the views, won the prestigious accolade of RTE Home of the Year last year.

Rob and Janice McConnell, the builders behind this luxurious home set against the scenic backdrop of Ballygalley, made sustainability the driving force behind their design process. Nestled within the historic grounds of an 18th-century mill, their single-story property epitomises a dedication to eco-conscious living.
'One supplier for all our heating requirements'
Commenting on the process of choosing their home heating system, Rob McConnell explained: “I really wanted one supplier for all our heating requirements and loved the idea of working with an Irish company to provide the heating technologies for our home.
"The heating design process was very straightforward, I sent my house plans through to the Grant team and they calculated the heat loss requirements for each room and provided a fully integrated heating solution including specified heating technologies for the property.”
Given the property's expansive size, the primary heating solution selected was the 13kW Grant Aerona³ R32 air to water heat pump, renowned for its efficiency.
Notably, this unit has earned recognition for its quiet operation from the esteemed Quiet Mark organisation. The Grant Aerona³ R32 air to water heat pump is extremely popular with those designing new properties due to its great compatibility with our range of supporting technologies.
Available in 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW outputs, all four models also boast superior seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) and depending on climate conditions and demand on the heating system at the time, can deliver 4kW of heat energy for every 1kW of electricity used.
Seamless hot water storage
Complementing this system, a pre-plumbed and pre-wired Grant hot water cylinder was opted for seamless hot water storage. Additionally, Rob chose Grant Uflex underfloor heating for uniform warmth across every room, with individual thermostats enabling precise zoned heating throughout the property.
“Our previous home was heated by oil and having now moved to an air to water heat pump, I have really noticed how the heat pump provides a level, constant heat throughout the house so it always feels warm and comfortable.
"Having solar PV means that I can also run the heat pump using renewable electricity during the day or take advantage of using a night-time rate for electricity so it’s a win win situation.”
Barry Gorman, national renewables sales manager at Grant commented: “We are delighted to have provided a bespoke home heating system for the McConnell’s self-build home.
"Designed to work together the Grant Aerona heat pump combined with Grant Uflex underfloor heating provides a highly efficient, low carbon heat solution which complements the sustainability focus of this beautiful home.”
