As an association of engineers, we were deeply shocked by the Russian invasion and attack on Ukraine which initiated a humanitarian crisis for the people of Ukraine. Sadly this year (2024), the war continues.
Engineers Ireland is supporting the Irish Red Cross to identify the suitability of accommodation generously pledged by the public for families and individuals travelling from Ukraine to Ireland.
We are helping to assess vacant properties available.
In 2022, we called on our engineering community, including practising and retired engineers, and in particular those with experience in assessment of residential properties, to support the Irish Red Cross and to assess accommodation. Over 300 members came forward and we thank you for your support in undertaking these assessments, pro bono. Members are called upon depending on the location of the property and local needs.
This assessment work continues. So current engineer-volunteers are still being contacted in 2023 by the Irish Red Cross – when needed. Volunteers should be mindful that they may get a call at any time.
If you are interested in supporting this ongoing assessment work as an assessor, and are a member of Engineers Ireland, please contact mairin@engineersireland.ie. She will be able to answer your questions.
A recording of a previous Guidance Webinar (going back to March 2022) for assessors and including a slide presentation can be found below.
