Seal of approval

By becoming a Chartered Engineer CEng MIEI, you will hold a seal of approval from your peers for your knowledge and competence.

Building Regulation sign off

Chartered Engineers are empowered to act as assigned certifiers and also have specific powers in relation to Fire and Safety Certification and the construction of Childcare Facilities and Nursing Homes.

Global recognition

The Chartered Engineer title is recognised in multiple countries, giving you a competitive advantage on an international stage. If you already hold a professional title you may be in a position to have it mutually recognised by us.

Chartered Engineers use their influence and expertise to promote the engineering profession and to progress developments in their field. Our research has found that a Chartered Engineer earns €5,000 more per year than an engineer without a professional title.

How to become a Chartered Engineer

To apply for the Registered Professional Title of Chartered Engineer, you will need to be a member and be eligible to apply, based on your qualifications. To begin your application, log into your member dashboard and select My Professional Title.

Step 1: Check eligibility

Check your eligibility to apply for Chartered Engineer, or any of the professional titles, by logging into your membership profile.

Step 2: Read the regulations

Use the Chartered Engineer Regulations and supporting documents as your guide.

Step 3: Application

Log into your membership profile to apply using the link. The next deadline to submit your professional title application is midnight on Friday, 27 June 2025.

Step 4: Supporters

You are required to have your application validated by two supporters who are Chartered Engineers with Engineers Ireland. For alternative supporters please contact the membership team.

Step 5: Payment

The application fee is €400

Step 6: Assessment and interview

After each deadline your application is assessed and if successful you will be invited to the interview stage.

Note: From 1 January 2013 the education requirement for Chartered Engineer is a Master's Degree in engineering accredited by Engineers Ireland. Graduates holding an Honours Bachelor's Degree in engineering accredited by Engineers Ireland, obtained prior to 2013, continues to meet the education standard required for Chartered Engineer. Qualifications from outside Ireland recognised under the Washington Accord are accepted as meeting the education level for Chartered Engineer.
