Introduction to Wind Energy

Details

1-day course

CPD Credit: 6.5 hours, C1/C2

Course Aim

This course is intended as an introduction to wind energy for engineers. The course introduces delegates to wind power generation and wind turbine design technologies. A wind turbine is a composite technology requiring specialist knowledge and skills from fields such as aerodynamics, composite structures, structural dynamics, mechanical engineering, control engineering and wind physics etc. In this course delegates will be introduced to the basic knowledge from each discipline relevant to the design and operation of wind turbines.

This course gives an overview of the key aspects in wind energy engineering. This course is an excellent introduction to wind energy for practicing engineers.

Course Overview

The aim of the course is to develop a detailed understanding of the issues associated with the development of wind energy. The course will focus on the current state of wind energy technology domestically and internationally and will consider the future development of wind resources.

Content includes:

• Overview of wind energy and introduction to wind flow

• Wind resource characterisation and siting of wind turbines

• Aerodynamics of wind turbines

• Wind turbine design

• Power production, power curves and control of wind turbines

• Design and control of wind farms

• Offshore wind energy

Course Objectives

After the course, delegates should be able to:

• Understand the basic physics driving the generation of wind and the forces this imposes on wind turbines

• Carry out siting assessment for wind turbines

• Carry out aerodynamic analysis for a wind turbine and develop power curves

• Understand joint wind wave loading of offshore wind turbines

• Understand wind farm effects

Course Programme

Morning session

• Wind Characteristics and power extraction

• Aerodynamics of Wind turbines

• Wind Turbine Design

Afternoon session

• Wind Turbine Control Systems

• Offshore Wind

• Q & A

Who Should Attend?

This course will be of interest to engineers with an interest in wind energy.

Trainer Profile

Breiffni Fitzgerald

Prof. Breiffni Fitzgerald BA BAI PhD CEng MIEI

Breiffni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) since 2016. During 2015-2016, Breiffni was a Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). He received his Doctorate in Structural Engineering and Wind Energy at TCD in 2013 on the topic of structural dynamics of wind turbines. Breiffni’s research interests lie in the areas of structural dynamics and health/condition monitoring of civil engineering structures in particular wind turbines. Breiffni has published over 30 international peer-reviewed technical articles and he has co-organized several international conferences and scientific workshops. Breiffni has also worked in industry throughout his career managing a large range of projects, primarily related to wind engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Engineers of Ireland and was nominated for ‘Chartered Engineer of the Year’ in 2017.
