This month STEPS Engineers Week, now in its 15th year, is going digital!
Taking place online from Saturday 27 February – Friday 5 March, STEPS Engineers Week aims to introduce the exciting world of engineering to young people, their parents and teachers. With your help, we can reach more participants, showing them the fun and exciting ways to learn about the fantastic world of engineering.
Three ways you can help encourage the next generation of engineers!
Share the word … and our free resources: Our STEPS team is asking you, our engineering professionals, to help spread the word amongst your own network that we are celebrating your great profession fully online this year. There are plenty of specially-devised engineering activities and challenges that can be downloaded for a remote setting, such as wind energy challenges, family friendly quizzes to determine who the ultimate engineer is, family trails which highlight some of Ireland’s great engineering feats, and STEM film and documentaries including a new ‘Mission Unstoppable’ series with our STEPS ambassador, NASA’s Fionnghuala O’Reilly. They are all free of charge and accessible here. The materials are suitable for use by primary and secondary school teachers, parents (which might also include you), wishing to undertake fun activities at home, or any event organiser. Please share within your organisation, with colleagues, with local primary and secondary school contacts and at your library. There are also remote family fairs that will open for booking shortly, taking place on Saturday and Sunday 27-28 February.
Undertake a digital school visit: Due to Covid-19 restrictions, schools visits by engineers are not possible. There are ways you can still engage with a school, particularly with one you are familiar with in your own locality. We have customisable presentations for primary and secondary school which you can download here and other tips for connecting with your local school.
Social media: If you’re on social media, we have prepared posts that you can use to help spread the word about our week-long digital celebration. You can access this shareable content here.
The continued support of you, our members of STEPS Engineers Week, is very much appreciated. STEPS is funded by SFI, the Department of Education and industry sponsors, Arup, ESB, Intel and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
