This week’s Sector Spotlight focuses on events by the North East region and South East region
Brexit Lecture Series: The EU-UK Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TCA) and Inter Trade Ireland Brexit Supports
The Brexit Lecture Series explores the impact of Brexit on engineering, business and trade in Ireland and the UK. An excellent line-up of speakers from manufacturing, construction, education and consultancy will address four evening events between March and May.
These insights will be relevant not only to engineers and business leaders on both sides of the Irish Sea, but also to members with an interest in Brexit and the new trade reality. The Brexit Lecture Series is a collaboration between the Donegal Region, GB Region, North East Region, North West Region and Northern Region.
In the first of the series, Mary White, head of NSAI's Brexit Unit and Deirdre Maguire, manager of Inter Trade Ireland’s Brexit Advisory Service, discussed the new EU-UK Trade and Co-operation Agreement and its impact on standards and conformity and outlined the supports and advice available to business and individuals from Inter Trade Ireland.
White and Maguire took attendees through some of the practical challenges the new agreement has made on business and the solutions that are now in place to deal with them.
The Sustainability Grand Tour: South East Greenway
The Sustainability Grand Tour explores the role of engineers in developing more sustainable cities and communities, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
With speakers from all over Ireland and internationally presenting case study examples of leading sustainability engineering projects, the webinar series aims to demonstrate how engineers can integrate sustainability concepts into their projects at all stages from design to end-of-life.
This free-to-attend weekly webinar series runs from January to mid-May and is a collaboration between 10 sectors of Engineers Ireland: the West, South East, Cork, Northern, Midlands, GB and North East Regions, the Energy, Environment and Climate Action Division and the Roads and Transportation and Academic Societies.
This instalment of the Sustainability Grand Tour examined the South East Greenway route, which will be a state-of-the-art cycling and walking route and is a joint initiative of Wexford County Council, Kilkenny County Council and Waterford City and County Council, supported by the local Partnership organisations. The speaker was Seán Breen, a Chartered Engineer with more than 15 years’ experience delivering civil and structural projects in the Ireland and the UK.
The webinar provided a brief overview of the design and construction of the 24km greenway from Abbey Road, north of Waterford City North Quays to the town of New Ross.
It included the design challenges of providing a new public amenity on a disused rail corridor which includes restoring protected structures such as the Red Bridge in New Ross, provision of new car parking infrastructure, and accommodation works for landowners.
