San Francisco calling? How you can represent Ireland at the International Electrotechnical Commission Young Professionals Workshop

NSAI has announced that it is offering an exciting opportunity to represent Ireland at the next IEC Young Professionals Workshop in San Francisco.

"Are you a young professional – age range mid-20s to mid-30s – using Standards in your current or previous role?" NSAI asked in a recent press statement.

It added: "Apply now for a place to represent Ireland at the International Electrotechnical Commission’s Young Professionals (IEC YP) Workshop in San Francisco from October 31 to November 4, 2022.

"As the nominee, you will enjoy all San Francisco has to offer while developing your career and networking with peers from around the globe.

"Entry is easy – you just need to fill out an application form and return a 600-word essay 'Outline a Standard you use in your current/previous role. If you could, what would be the main changes you would make to the standard and why?'

"Entries must be returned by July 3, 2022."

The IEC is the world’s leading organisation for the preparation and publication of International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies, bringing together the world's upcoming expert engineers, technicians and managers.

The Young Professionals programme will provide you with more opportunities to shape the future of international standardisation and conformity assessment in the field of electrotechnology, NSAI said.

Requirements for entry

You have some experience in using standards in your current or previous role;
You are aged early 20s to mid-30s;
You work for a business, industry, association, education body or government body that is using, benefiting from or contributing to the IEC's (International Electrotechnical Commission) work.

How to enter

The application should be sent to Amanda-Jane.Gainford@nsai.ie by July 3, 2022. The application requires:

A copy of your CV;
A completed application form;
A headshot which you would be happy to submit to the IEC YPP if successful;
A maximum 600-word essay that addresses 'Outline a Standard you use in your current/previous role. If you could, what would be the main changes you would make and why?';
A short interview may form part of the selection process.

Selection process

After the deadline, a selection panel may consider the factors listed below when reading entries:

Your experience using or working with standards?
Your willingness to join an NSAI Electrotechnical committee?
Your willingness and commitment to encourage others to use standards and to get involved in their development.

In late July, the selection panel will invite successful candidates who have made it to the next round to participate in an online interview. The winner chosen to attend the workshop will then be notified in August. The selection panel's decision on the winner is final.
