Engineers Ireland has unveiled a CPD programme on 'Retrofitting Domestic Buildings for Energy Efficiency'. Delivered online, this programme aims to develop a technical understanding of the issues relating to the energy efficient retrofit of dwellings.
Focusing particularly on the recommendations set out in NSAI SR54 'Code of Practice – Methodology for the Energy Efficient Retrofit of Existing Dwellings', this comprehensive programme comprises of 5 module components, all of which are considered essential components of Energy Efficiency. These modules will cover topics including; Near Zero Energy Buildings, Basic Building Physics, Building Fabric, Building Services and Renewable Energy.
Programme modules
Scheduled to commence on November 10, programme modules will be delivered across five consecutive weeks as follows:
- Module 1: Near Zero Energy Building – Wednesday, November 10
- Module 2: Basic Building Physics; Heat Loss and Storage – Wednesday, November 17
- Module 3: Building Fabric – Wednesday, November 24
- Module 4: Building Services; Mechanical Systems in Buildings – Wednesday, December 1
- Module 5: Renewable Energy; Thermal and Electricity Generation – Wednesday, December 8
Each module is designed to build from the next and provide a structured learning experience for delegates to develop a thorough understanding across all issues relating to the energy efficient retrofit of dwellings. Upon completion of this programme delegates should be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the issues around energy, building regulations and certification schemes in relation to dwellings
- Understand the processes relating to the thermal properties and heat loss mechanisms pertaining to dwellings
- Appraise the building envelope and recommend potential retrofitting solutions
- Understand space heating, water heating and ventilation systems and their impact on energy performance.
- Differentiate between a range of thermal and electrical energy generation solutions suitable for retrofitting into dwellings
'Requisite knowledge of all key considerations'
Speaking about this newly developed programme, Dee Kehoe, CPD director in Engineers Ireland said: “This comprehensive new Engineers Ireland training programme equips engineers with the requisite knowledge of all key considerations for the successful retrofit of domestic buildings for energy efficiency. The five modules are mapped to NSAI SR54 Code of Practice”.
Mervin Doyle, one of the programme tutors, added:“Designed to improve expertise across all aspects of energy retrofitting of dwellings, this programme will provide knowledge of the building regulations and how they relate to energy efficiency in dwellings as well as providing an understanding of basic building physics and principles of heat loss and storage in dwellings”.
