Engineers Ireland is calling on Ireland’s engineering community to showcase their inspiring engineering endeavours as part of a new six-part video series.
The Engineering Excellence Digital Series, held in association with ESB and supported by Accenture and Geoscience Ireland, aims to recognise excellence in the engineering sector and the positive impact that engineers have made to society.
“The Engineering Excellence Digital Series aims to shine a light on the role of engineers and the important contribution they make to society,” said Caroline Spillane, director general of Engineers Ireland.
“In association with our title sponsor ESB, we look forward to profiling engineering initiatives which have had greatest impact on Irish society over the past 12 months and engineers who have demonstrated excellence and visionary leadership.”
The professional membership body is now calling on engineers, engineering businesses and firms, local authorities and third level institutions to highlight their top project work of 2021 for their opportunity to feature in the series.
Showcase stories and achievements of engineers
Calling on participation by Ireland’s engineering community, Spillane added: “We want to showcase through professional video, the stories and achievements of engineers and engineering projects that stand out in 2021 and we invite Ireland’s engineering community to get involved.
“We are looking for evidence of talent, skill and hard work demonstrated by engineers in a range of settings. That work could be in infrastructural development, or advances in medtech, or manufacturing, or an excellent sustainable or digital solution to benefit society. We want to shine a light on the role of engineers in our community and we look forward to receiving entries from all engineering disciplines.”
Pat O’Doherty, chief executive of ESB, said: “ESB is proud to support the Engineering Excellence Digital Series as it strives to celebrate the endeavour, impact and inspirational nature of Ireland’s engineering talent. Ireland’s engineers work every day to improve lives and find solutions to big societal challenges, both here in Ireland and globally.
"By demonstrating what a diverse, exciting and purposeful career choice engineering can be, we hope to celebrate Ireland’s talented engineering community and inspire future generations of engineers.”
The six categories – now open for entry – through a simple online application form are:
- Engineering Sustainability. Climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse are the most serious issues of our time and transformational action is required in all engineering sectors and disciplines. This category will champion an engineering project or initiative, including those within the geoscience field, which has embraced the core pillars of climate action and/or biodiversity and delivered a sustainable solution which will benefit the environment and society.
- Engineering Innovation. This category will recognise innovation developed and delivered by Ireland’s engineers. For example, innovative initiatives entered may refer to digital innovation including industry 4.0, manufacturing and med-tech developments. Our engineering community’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic can also feature.
- Engineering Infrastructure. This category will champion infrastructure projects of regional and national significance, such as transport infrastructure, for example roads, bridges, railways, public realms, cycles routes, airports or ports or utilities infrastructure for example water, gas, electricity or communications utilities. The critical disciplines across geoscience are also recognised as key enablers to Ireland's infrastructure development.
- Buildings and Structures. This category will recognise the role of Ireland’s engineering community in the development and protection of buildings and structures of national and regional significance. This category will be open to both new buildings and structures which have been developed and also preservation or restoration projects on buildings or locations of historic importance.
- Engineering Impact. This category will recognise an engineering project that has created the greatest positive impact on Irish society over the past 12 months, whether that is through its ambition, purpose, complexity, or contribution to a community. For example, the project submitted to this category should have a positive and beneficial social, environmental, cultural or economic impact on a community.
- Engineer of the Year. This category will recognise an engineer from the broad range of engineering fields who has demonstrated excellence, visionary leadership and influence. This engineer will have had a significant positive impact and contribution to the nominee’s team, organisation, fellow engineers, or the wider community.
