Professor Eugene Kennedy, emeritus professor of physics and former vice-president for research at DCU, has been appointed to the European Commission’s seven-member Group of Chief Scientific Advisers, to provide advice to inform EU policy making.

The group is part of the commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), with input from learned academies via the Scientific Advice for Policy by European Academies consortium and a commission secretariat.  

Prof Kennedy has published widely on short-wavelength source development, plasma diagnostics and the interaction of ionizing photons with atomic/molecular ions.

Founding director of the National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology and former chair of the RPII Board, he has coordinated European research networks and served on EU evaluation panels including the Fusion Programme Evaluation Board.
