Engineers Ireland has welcomed Cabinet agreement to move forward with the Dublin MetroLink project.
The public transport ‘megaproject’, which will transform public transport in Dublin and improve interconnectivity with national rail links, is of high importance to Ireland’s transport infrastructure. The project will provide 16 new stations with the ability to transport 20,000 passengers per hour across Dublin, connecting the city with the airport as part of a modern transport system.
The development of the MetroLink will also be essential to achieving our sustainability goals. The project is set to provide a carbon-neutral transport option for an estimated 175,000 people within walking distance of the 16 stations.
Engineers Ireland previously called for progress on the MetroLink project in the State of Ireland 2020, highlighting the sustainability advantages of the MetroLink. To achieve our carbon budget targets set for 2050, the construction and operation of MetroLink is now required as soon as possible. The project is expected to create 4000 jobs during the construction phase of the project, boosting the national recovery from the pandemic and Brexit.
