One of highest professional distinctions an engineer can receive
Election to the NAE is one of the highest professional distinctions an engineer can receive. Prof O’Malley is the only Irish member of the NAE.
He is the founding director of the
UCD Electricity Research Centre (ERC), director of the International Institute of Energy Systems Integration and chief scientist at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Prof O’Malley, UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, is a member of the Royal Irish Academy, fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and dual Fulbright Fellowship recipient. He completed both his bachelor of engineering and doctorate at UCD.
The NAE is an elected group more than 2,000 of the most accomplished engineers in the US and around the world. Its mission is to "promote the technological welfare of the nation by marshalling the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession".
It is part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and operates under the same congressional act of incorporation that established the National Academy of Sciences, signed in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln.
Prof O’Malley will be formally inducted into the NAE on September 30 this year
