Training aim

Course aim is to educate engineering consultants and end-users on the new ABB IE5 Synchronous Reluctance drive and motor package.

Learning objectives

Inform the audience of the EuP Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for industrial electric motors being phased in between 2011 and 2017 in Europe.

Introduction to:

Synchronous Reluctance motor / drive technology

IE5 super premium efficiency motors where energy losses reduced by up to 40% compared to IE2 efficiency class

High Output SynRM motor that is up to two frame sizes smaller than conventional induction motor without compromising efficiency

Inform on the additional benefits of SynRM technology including

The cool-running rotor keeps the bearing temperature very low. IE4 SynRM winding temperature rise is well below class B. These factors take motor reliability to an unprecedented level.

Course outline

Synchronous motors controlled by variable-speed drives are bringing higher efficiencies to industrial applications.

Electric motors in industrial applications account for approximately 60 – 65 percent of consumed industrial electricity. Using energy effectively by increasing motor efficiency is at the centre of continued motor optimisation.

Major energy savings are also gained through the use of variable speed drive systems and today this technology is adopted in as many as 30 – 40 percent of all newly installed motors.

Sustainable use and investment also demand increased reliability and lifetime of a motor. The streamlined rotor structure of ABB’s synchronous reluctance motors eliminates rotor cage losses, therefore, increasing efficiency and compactness.

The possibility of achieving standard power and torque levels at merely a low class-A temperature rise (60 K) improves the lifetime of the motor insulation and lengthens the bearing lifetime or greasing intervals.
