Training aim
The Higher Diploma in Business Studies is an NFQ Level 8, one year postgraduate course is delivered full time. Applicants require a Level 8 honours degree of H2.2 standard or above to meet the entry requirement. This course is open to graduates of any discipline who wish to acquire a grounding in business practices.
The Higher Diploma Business Studies is designed to provide non-business graduates with a well-rounded understanding of business. Students will be educated in the fundamental skills of business administration, enabling them to play an active role in the management and development of business enterprises. All modules assume no previous knowledge of the subject.Subjects studied as part of this course include Accounting, Business Information Systems, Economics, Marketing and Management.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the Higher Diploma in Business Studies it is expected graduates will be able to:
- Apply effective decision making to global business problems
- Demonstrate skills in Accounting and Finance, Management, Marketing, Economics and Business Information Systems
- Identify, analyse and solve applied problems in individual and team-based settings
- Effectively communicate with peers and business using a range of media relevant in global business
- Work effectively as an individual, in teams and in multi-disciplinary settings together with the capacity to undertake lifelong learning
Course outline
This programme includes core modules on Accounting, Financial Management, Economics, Management, Marketing Principles, Management Information Systems, and Communications in Organisations. A wide range of optional modules are also available to students in Semester Two, which include Accounting for Management Decisions, Macroeconomics, Employment Relations, Global Marketing, Cybersecurity, and Business Law. The range of modules available allows students to either specialise in a particular discipline or to study a broad range of business subjects.

The Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development aims to advance the lifelong learning needs of adult learners. CALPD provides continuing professional development opportunities to the region through the delivery of higher education qualifications and stand-alone CPD modules. We serve four groups of people: professionals who wish to upskill; employers who want to develop the skills of their staff; professional bodies that manage accreditation for their members; and course coordinators who deliver training.
