Training aim

The aim of the course is to increase awareness of geosynthetics and geotextiles in road making operations among participants; why they are used, in what situations and how they are installed.

Learning objectives

The course will provide the participant with a greater understanding on the use of geosynthetics and geotextiles. In particular, and in particular on the:

  • Use of geosynthetics
  • Locations they are suitable for use
  • Installation process and methods
  • Advantages in using geosynthetics and geotextiles.

Course outline

Geotextiles and Geosynthetics are becoming increasingly popular in road improvement and strengthening works throughout the country. Irish Ta'rs "Geosynthetics in Engineering - An Overview" course looks at why and where they are used. The course also focuses on installation methods and looks at various case studies where they were used. 

Trainer's profile

Tony Broderick - Chartered Engineer.

Tony has been involved in Surface Dressing operations for more 20 years, having worked as an Area Engineer with a number of Local Authorities before joining Irish Tar. He has a depth of knowledge and experience in Binder Technology, as well as in the surface dressing process and operation. In addition, he has specialised knowledge and experience on the use of geosynthetics in dealing with geotechnical problems and solutions.

David Hogan - BEng Structural Engineer.

David is Irish Tar's Road Materials Technical Manager and has over 12 years experience in road materials engineering. David is a leading member of numerous surface dressing technical committees and has a depth of experience in the process. David is also involved in road materials design and standards development.

Damien McCormack – Chartered Engineer.

Damien is an experienced roads engineer, having worked as a Design Engineer with a multidiscipline consulting engineers, as an area engineer with Cavan Local Authority and more recently as a Regional Road Safety Engineer with TII. He has a vast array of experience in road making and surface dressing operations.
