Training aim

The specialist diploma awards are particularly suitable for students requiring medium-term upskilling for career advancement or for those interested in focused study in this subject area for personal or topical interest.

The specialist diplomas are linked to the degree cycle of the modular programme in Science and Technology Studies which allow students to specialise by choosing from a range of electives.

These elective modules are also available as independent awards which students may take for the purposes of upskilling or retraining in the area of Corporate Environmental Planning, Automation & Control, Medical Device Science or Lean & Quality Systems.

Learning objectives

NUI Galway have collaborated with Skillnet Ireland to develop the Level 8 specialist Diploma in Corporate Environmental Planning. This is a practice-based course which provides an overview of the evolution of environmental planning and management and its relationship to society and industry today.

Drawing on contemporary examples, this course will explore the roots and principles of environmental planning and management in practice, introducing students to a range of conceptual and practical approaches.

It will equip students with the knowledge and skills to assume environmental leadership and management positions to develop solutions for contemporary environmental issues in industrial and commercial environments

Course outline

Students will undertake six modules:

Environmental Science; Environmental Leadership in Organisations; Environmental Management for Organisations; Environmental Legislation and Compliance; the Lean Organisation and Technology; and Energy Management.

Each module will be individually assessed by assignments completed throughout the semester, using innovative and authentic assessment methods to enable learners to demonstrate capabilities and competencies as well as academic knowledge. The major assignment for each module will be the development of a plan for the participant’s workplace.

The Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development aims to advance the lifelong learning needs of adult learners. CALPD provides continuing professional development opportunities to the region through the delivery of higher education qualifications and stand-alone CPD modules.

We serve four groups of people: professionals who wish to upskill; employers who want to develop the skills of their staff; professional bodies that manage accreditation for their members; and course coordinators who deliver training.

One year, part-time.

Assessment and certification

It introduces students to a range of conceptual and practical approaches and prepares them with the knowledge and skills to be leaders and decision makers in developing solutions for contemporary environmental issues.

It also provides students with an understanding of waste legislation, the key issues and practical implications in relation to waste management, and focuses on lean processes and waste prevention.
 
This specialist diploma award is particularly suitable for students requiring medium-term upskilling for career advancement in the area of environmental policy and leadership to strengthen their capacities as efficient environmental managers and effective environmental leaders in their organisations.

If graduates so wish they can progress to the BSc in Science and Technology Studies (NFQ Level 8) with credit for their studies. In this case they will be exempt from one elective stream in the Degree cycle.

Who should attend

The specialist diplomas are primarily intended for students who already have a Science or Engineering related diploma or degree and who wish to up-skill or become expert in one of the specialist areas as offered through these one-year diploma courses.
