Bluesky has raised the bar for aerial photography in Ireland. All our imagery has been created to the ultimate standard, not only in terms of colour, accuracy and detail but we have also ‘straightened’ every feature in each photograph to give you ‘True Ortho’. Traditional methods only correct for distortion caused by terrain whereas Bluesky corrects buildings and trees making them completely ‘straight’.
The GIS data of choice
All this makes Bluesky data the GIS data of choice for government and professionals in Ireland. The imagery can truly be used as a map, as all features are visible, meaning unlike standard ortho, it is more than just a backdrop. To complement the true ortho imagery Bluesky offers the most up-to-date and highest resolution DTM and DSM data, as well as Colour Infrared Imagery. And to top it all Bluesky has the most recent and highest resolution data of Dublin, which was captured in 2018.
All this is backed up by fantastic customer and technical service gained from years of experience in aerial survey around the world. Bluesky’s pedigree has put it in the enviable position of being recognised as a global leader in its field. The dedicated Bluesky team has continually kept up to date with technology to ensure its data is second to none and can be accessed quickly, efficiently and hassle-free through online mapping portals and web mapping services. So what is True Ortho?
So what is True Ortho and why is that important? The nature of how aerial photos are taken means that objects towards the edge of the photo are viewed from a slight angle. So you are viewing elevated features (for example, hills, buildings and trees) marginally from the side; this is a form of distortion.
The result is that objects behind a building, for example, are obscured from view; this is not helpful for applications such as asset management, mapping and planning. Traditionally, orthorectification methods have only ever removed the distortion caused by the terrain (for example, hills and valleys), using just a DTM.
Bluesky’s advanced processing technology uses a very high resolution DSM, which also removes distortion from building, trees and other elevated objects, and thereby revealing all the features hidden on the ground. Bluesky data is the only data in Ireland produced to this very high standard.
“This is the second set of aerial photography we have secured from Bluesky and despite high expectations we have not been disappointed.” Michael Healy, data analytics and GIS manager at Limerick City & County Council
