Subsea Marine Ltd, headed up by Paddy Agnew, have been busy. The salvage of big boats and small boats has kept the company busy over the last few months, the most notable, the Regina Caelis, was salvaged from Cook St Quay at Portaferry, Co Down. The vessel, a 140ft three masted schooner, sank at the pier in January 2017 and became a significant impairment to marine traffic and local amenities. The Ards and North Down Council were anxious to have it removed to avoid damage to the pier, and free up the area. Following a lengthy tender process, the contract was awarded to Subsea Marine and operations began to prepare the wreckage for removal. [caption id="attachment_41263" align="alignleft" width="663"] Photo of Regina Caelis from the air[/caption] Rigorous health and safety procedures were a pretender requirement, with particular attention on the impact to the environment and pollution, monitored by the Northern Ireland EPA during the whole operation. [caption id="attachment_41264" align="alignleft" width="300"] Lara 1 lifting the Regina Caelis from outer pier[/caption] The crane barge the 'Lara 1' was hired in to lift the vessel from the pier and delicately move her to the inner pier to be dismantled. It took four weeks to dismantle, recycle, dispose of asbestos, and leave the area scrupulously clean, to the relief of the local community.
