maxon, the manufacturer of precision drive systems, has achieved its 25th anniversary of business in the UK and Ireland.

At the end of June, maxon’s global leadership joined the UK & Ireland team to celebrate the landmark at an event at Tylney Hall, Berkshire, near maxon UK and Ireland’s Wokingham base.

“The support of maxon's global management at the event, in what remains a privately owned enterprise, shows the commitment maxon has, at its most senior level, to its UK and Ireland customer base," said maxon UK and Ireland managing director, William Mason.

Dr Karl-Walter Braun, main shareholder and chairman of the board of directors of maxon Group, and company CEO Eugen Elmiger, joined the maxon UK and Ireland team at the event.

maxon UK and Ireland was established in 1999 following an approach to maxon distributor, Trident Engineering, to join the maxon Group. Keith Ellenden became maxon UK and Ireland’s first managing director before passing the mantle to William Mason in 2010.  

Team of qualified electrical and mechanical engineers

Today, maxon UK and Ireland includes a team of qualified electrical and mechanical engineers who support customers in drive system technology. maxon provides custom and production designs of brushed and brushless DC motors, gears, encoders, and controllers.

Focussing on precision control applications, maxon UK and Ireland’s customer base covers aerospace, medical devices, automotive, robotics, and industrial automation sectors.

“I am proud of maxon UK and Ireland. For the past 25 years we have consistently provided customers with access to drive system expertise and fostered long-term relationships,” said Mason.

“Most customers we work with take advantage of our engineering experience to enhance their applications and designs, and a growing number also utilise our custom design service.”

In 2018, maxon UK and Ireland expanded following the acquisition of Parvalux, the Poole-based manufacturer of geared motors focusing on higher-power applications such as building automation and material handling. As well as expanding maxon’s capabilities, the acquisition has enabled innovative, new products, such as brushless DC motors with right-angle gears.

As a global organisation, maxon was founded in Sachseln, Switzerland, in 1961, as Interelectric, a production site for Braun, the electrical engineering company known for its electric shavers. In 1969, using the maxon brand, Interelectric developed the world’s first DC motors with an ironless rotor, doubling the efficiency compared to traditional designs.

With bases all over the world, maxon is best known for providing drive systems for demanding applications, including all of Nasa’s Mars missions, the first launched in 1997.
