This evening lecture examines the management of EIA and AA in the planning and design of major road infrastructure projects and will cover the following areas:

  1. What is Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA)
  2. The legislative basis
  3. Balancing environmental effects with Project Appraisal (i.e. the Public Spending Code)
  4. Collaboration and public participation (non-statutory and statutory)
  5. Iterative design process and mitigation
    - Environmental project sensitivities and how they were navigated
    - The consideration of alternatives
  6. Some pitfalls

About the speaker

Fergus Meehan Chartered Engineer - Project Engineer/Manager in the Sligo National Roads Project Office
Fergus has been responsible for navigating two major road infrastructure projects through the statutory Environmental Impact Assessment and Appropriate Assessment processes - the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development and the N16 Drumkilsellagh to Lugnagall Road Development.
