About the event

In this presentation Prof Kevin McGuigan will provide an overview of his 25+ years' involvement with the development, implementation and evaluation of solar water disinfection (SODIS) as an intervention against waterborne disease for rural communities without sustained access to safe drinking water in low-to-middle-income nations throughout Africa and Asia. He will explain the origins of the technology, the challenges encountered along the way to implementation and why often you need more than just a simple scientific solution to a very human problem.

About the speaker

Prof Kevin McGuigan teaches Physics on the Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy programs at the RCSI. He is the director of the RCSI Solar Disinfection Research Group which develop appropriate water treatment interventions against waterborne disease for use in resource-poor environments. He specialises in running field trials to evaluate these technologies and has completed such studies in Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Cambodia. He currently coordinates two EU Horizon 2020 projects: the WATERSPOUTT and the PANIWATER Project.
