About the event

Offshore wind energy is rapidly evolving, with technical advancements driving down costs on the international stage. In an Irish context, after several decades of inactivity, offshore wind is about to become a large-scale industry. Over the next decade, the 2019 climate action plan predicts at least 3.5GW of offshore development will be connected to the grid, which will primarily be fixed substructure projects in the Irish Sea off the east coast. The successful delivery of these projects will be reliant on robust consideration of the ground conditions.

This presentation will provide an overview of the key impacts that the ground conditions have on an offshore wind development. The geotechnical interfaces include: 1. early stage site selection; 2. offshore surveying; 3. foundation concept selection; 4. foundation detailed design; 5. cabling; and 6. installation engineering.

All of these topics will be discussed, with a focus on how the design methods have developed and improved in recent years, to facilitate optimisation of offshore geotechnics for wind farm projects.

About the speaker

Paul Doherty Chartered Engineer - Managing Director and founder of Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG)
GDG is a specialist consultancy focused on geotechnics, offshore and heavy civil engineering. Following graduation from UCD with a BE in Civil Engineering and a PhD in offshore geotechnics, Paul focused on foundation optimisation working on both domestic and international projects.

Since setting up GDG in 2011, Paul has grown the team to over 75 engineers working on projects all over the world from offices in Ireland and the UK. Paul is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland, and a committee member of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI). Paul has published over 50 technical papers, primarily focused on the topics of offshore piling, foundation design, geotechnical risk management and ground model development.
