About the Event

Under the National Development Plan 2018-2027, Ireland has committed to replacing existing diesel buses for the urban public bus fleet with low-emission alternatives.  As of July 2019, Ireland will no longer purchase diesel-only buses for public service obligation services.

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport carried out a series of trials on fifteen buses over a five-month period (December 2018 to April 2019) in Dublin and Cork.  With diesel-only buses no longer permitted, DTTAS needs to understand the alternative technologies and, importantly, the emissions generated under real-world driving conditions.

In this presentation Colum Kenny will provide an overview of the methodology employed in examining these alternatives and the main findings from the trials. He will also discuss the potential contributions these technologies could make to renewable energy targets, emissions reductions and improvements to local air quality, as well as providing insights from the cost benefit analysis carried out on the alternative bus technologies and fuels.
