Irish-based engineering employers are attracting more and more engineers and technicians with English as a second language. Whilst they may possess excellent technical English they are often keen to improve their general business English in an engineering context.

Course Aim

This one-day EFL programme will help you develop your business English in an engineering context allowing you to use professional language more accurately and confidently.

This course has been designed to enable engineers and technicians with English as a second language to enhance and develop their spoken and written use of the language. Through a series of targeted classes, students will become aware of useful grammar, phrases and skills that can improve their command of the language in a professional context boosting confidence and fluency.

This is an intensive course with full material and follow-up guaranteed.

Course Programme

  • 9:00am - Registration (teas and coffees) and Introductions
  • 9:20am - Outline and Welcome
  • 9:30am - Part 1 - Describing Process: Using key verbs and linking phrases to accurately describe a process based on current engineering projects. Focus on accuracy and fluency.
  • 10:30am - Tea Break
  • 10:45 - Part 2 - Effective Communication: Phrases used in office communication: emails, phone calls, and meetings. Asking for clarification during phone conversations, in spoken language, and listening for detail.
  • 11:45am - Part 3 - Effective Writing Skills: Key phrases for formal language. Responding and following up.
  • 12:45pm - Lunch
  • 1:45pm - Part 4: Design and Detail: Listening practice: Focus on numbers and statistics. Looking at real examples from actual case studies offering suggestions.
  • 3:00pm - Tea Break
  • 3:15pm - Part 5: Technical Language: A review of vocabulary for technical descriptions, techniques and examples to describe functions and practises in engineering. Word formation.
  • 4:00pm - Part 6: Practical Language and Phrasal Verbs: In office communication, popular phrases. Short story translating from formal to informal.
  • 4:30pm - Consolidation, Revision
  • 5:00pm - Close

The course is aimed at engineering professionals who already possess a minimum Intermediate level of English and are looking for the opportunity to develop and enhance their professional communication skills and network.

Confirmation is subject to event fee being finalised. Cancellation fees calculated at 50% of the estimated total bill will be charge for confirmed bookings cancelled less than 5 working days prior to the date of the planned event. A replacement person can attend instead. Cancellations made the day prior to an event will be charged 75% of the total estimated bill. No-shows will be charged the full fee. All cancellations must be confirmed in writing by email. Engineers Ireland will not be liable for any costs in the event of a course being re-scheduled.  This applies, but is not limited, to any travelling, subsistence or consequential expenses incurred by delegates.
