Electric Vehicle Charging - Infrastructure, Market and Connectivity

Organisation profile

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in power grids, electrification products, industrial automation and robotics and motion, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalisation with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries.

Training aim

To take a holistic view of the EV Charging segments and to appreciate the infrastructure (Chargers and Electrical), both IoT and electrical that is required to support each segment.

Learning objectives

Specific Learning Objectives:

o EV Charging in the context of climate change and alternate technologies

o Industry background in relation to Automotive manufacturers, technological advancements and charging standards including CCS and CHAdeMO.

o 22 kW AC Charging, what is possible vs what can be realised in terms of speed.

o Projected Trends and Requirements in relation to EV charging networks.

o Charging Technology that is applicable to different user cases.

o High Power Charging and Dynamic DC

Course outline

Electric Vehicle Charging is something that is quite new in Ireland and knowing more about this will help further Ireland’s 2020 and 2030 De-Carbonisation Targets. The CPD module will give the audience a rounded view of the e-mobility segment including charging technology, charging technology segments, supporting infrastructure both electrical and IoT, automotive EV technology and future trends.

Trainer's profile

Prior to studying to become an Electrical Engineer, James served his time as an electrician both with private industry and ESB Networks. James worked as an Electrical Engineer with both ESB International (HV Substation Design and Project Management) and ESB Networks (DS3 technical programs and program management), achieving Professional Engineer status with ESB before pursuing an MBA. Post MBA James took up the technical/commercial position as Market Development Manager in ABB Ireland for EVI.
