About the event

On foot of the Dublin Rail Rapid Transit Study (1975), the first phase of the DART system was brought into service between Bray and Howth in 1984. The system was subsequently extended to Malahide and Greystones and is acknowledged as one of Ireland’s great transportation success stories. Since then Iarnród Éireann has expanded the commuter service across the Greater Dublin Area.  The Transport Strategy for the GDA (NTA, 2016) and the current National Development Plan (2018-2027) has provided an investment focus for heavy rail to provide a core and high capacity/high quality transit system and act as the spine of an integrated public transport system.

DART Expansion will provide increased capacity on radial routes into and out of Dublin City to accommodate growing passenger demands in the short, medium and long term. Drogheda, Maynooth, Hazelhatch (Celbridge) will be electrified and signaled to allow for adequate system capacity. Network conflicts including level crossings and track layouts will be reconfigured/eliminated.  DART Expansion will assist the national aspiration to transition to a low carbon society and reduce road congestion by providing a high quality and reliable transportation system.
