About the event

In this presentation, Bill Doherty will describe the medical device design and manufacturing operation at the Cook Medical plant in Limerick and outline typical end uses of Cook Medical products. He will describe the typical roles that engineers play in the design and manufacturing process and the skills required by graduates to fulfil these roles.  He will outline the design-to-commercialisation process for new products, regulation in the medical device manufacture industry and the Cook experience with engineering and technology graduates.  He will also describe the Cook/UL research project on the development of a novel alloy for stent manufacture.
 

About the Speaker

Bill Doherty is Managing Director of Cook Ireland Ltd and Executive Vice President of Cook Group Europe with responsibility for Cook’s EMEA business.  Cook Medical is a diversified medical technologies company specialising in minimally invasive surgery and employing over 750 people at its plant in the National Technology Park, Limerick.  Prior to joining Cook in 1994, Bill held senior management positions with Atari, Digital Equipment Corporation and EG&G Electro-Optics.  Bill holds a BE (Electrical) from UCD and an MBA from TCD.  He served on the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland from 2007 to 2011 and is currently a board member of the Irish Medical Device Association and chairman of the Code of Ethics Committee.  Bill also chairs the Advisory Board of the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) at UL.
