About the event

Our first event in our “Industry in our Region” series of 2019-2020 will be hosted by BD at their R&D facility in Castletroy Limerick.

There will be a short site tour where attendees will see their advanced medical technology in an R&D setting, followed by a presentation from BD and Croom Precision.

The presentations from the companies will cover the following

  • an overview of the company’s activities
  • main products and markets
  • technologies and processes
  • technical and business challenges
  • areas of best practice and
  • topics for knowledge sharing

The “Industry in our Region” series is an initiative by Engineers Ireland’s Thomond region to provide engineers with the opportunity to learn about their neighbouring companies in the region.

About the speakers

Padraig Fitzgerald is Site Director at BD Research Centre Ireland.  He played a key role in starting up the organisation in 2016 and establishing it as a strategically important extension of the R&D function within the global business. Prior to joining BD, he held roles of responsibility in the semiconductor, energy and medical sectors.  Padraig has a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Limerick and is currently completing a Master’s in Business at University College Dublin Business School.

Patrick Byrnes of Croom Precision, Croom Co Limerick, graduated from CIT with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Patrick received the ‘Enterprise Ireland Graduate of Outstanding Innovation Achievement Award’ at Cork Institute of Technology in 2018 and he is currently undertaking a PhD in additive technology.  Croom Precision’s research and development activities are being headed up by Patrick, who is the second-generation Byrnes to run the company, which has seen rapid demand in the specialised field of metallic and polymer additive manufacturing.
