About the event

Sligo experienced the worst flooding in memory in 2015. Triggered by that flood event, Sligo County Council commissioned a study to characterise and quantify the flooding which occurred at Ballyfree and Carrowroe townlands based on data from the flood event. This identified the flooding as a combination of groundwater and surface water flooding, resulting from extreme long duration rainfall events coupled with extreme short duration events, occurring in a karst hydrogeological setting.

More detailed monitoring, analysis and modelling is on-going in order to better quantify the flood controls and risks. The data are being used to model potential mitigation options and thus inform an effective flood mitigation and management strategy for the two areas.
