Tour to Culham Centre for Fusion Energy
About the Event
Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is the UK's national laboratory for fusion research. Fusion is the process that heats the Sun and all other stars, where atomic nuclei collide together and release huge amounts of energy. It has excellent potential as a large-scale source of carbon-free electricity. Fusion scientists and engineers are developing the technology to use this process in tomorrow's power stations.
The UK fusion programme is centred on the MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) experiment at Culham. In addition, CCFE hosts the world's largest magnetic fusion experiment, JET (Joint European Torus), on behalf of its European partners. The research at Culham is focused on developing the successor to JET - the multinational ITER project at Cadarache, France. ITER will be the first ever industrial-scale fusion experiment and is seen as the stepping stone to the realisation of commercial fusion power.
Participants on this tour, should meet at Oxford Railway Station at 2.15pm where they will be taken by bus to Culham. The two hour tour includes an introductory talk on fusion followed by a tour of the facility by a scientist/engineer. Return time is 5.30pm followed by a meal and drinks.
