HS2 - an engine for growth
About the event
In the first event of the 2017 calendar, the GB region of Engineers Ireland host Mark Raiss, Engineering Director of AECOM, who will take us through the HS2 project. AECOM are responsible for developing the Phase 1 section of HS2 from London to the west midlands. This commission included design and environmental work along this 230km route, including cuttings and tunnels on over 50% of this section.

About the speaker
Dr Mark Raiss - Engineering Director, AECOM
As Engineering Director for AECOM, Mark is responsible for a 9,000-strong team covering Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. He has had substantial experience in major road and railway projects, both underground, at-grade and elevated. He has led multi-disciplinary teams on projects in the UK, Hong Kong, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Malaysia. He has a world-class reputation for large and complex infrastructure projects and led all of URS’ design work on the Crossrail Central Section which forms part of Europe’s largest construction project. He has developed innovative construction methods for transportation structures to reduce programmes, improve buildability and reduce material quantities and he frequently advises contractors on construction methodology and temporary works. He is passionate about the timely delivery of economic and buildable solutions. He is the author of a number of technical papers and has chaired various technical committees. Since 2002 he has delivered an annual undergraduate lecture on ‘Creating Underground Space’ at Cambridge University.
