About the event

For more than 25 years, Prof. Kevin McGuigan has been involved with the development, implementation and evaluation of solar water disinfection (SODIS) as an intervention against waterborne disease for rural communities without sustained access to safe drinking water in low-to-middle-income nations throughout Africa and Asia. In this talk, he will explain the origins of the technology, the challenges encountered along the way to implementation and why often you need more than just a simple scientific solution to a very human problem.

About the speaker

Prof. Kevin McGuigan teaches Physics on the Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy programs in the RCSI. He is the director of the RCSI Solar Disinfection Research Group which develops appropriate water treatment interventions against waterborne disease for use in resource-poor environments. He specializes in running field trials to evaluate these technologies and has completed such studies in Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, S. Africa and Cambodia. He currently coordinates two EU Horizon 2020 projects: the €3.6M WATERSPOUTT Project (http://www.waterspoutt.eu) and the €4.9M PANIWATER Project. Collectively these projects partner 36 organisations across Europe, Africa and India, aimed at developing new solar drinking water and wastewater treatment technologies. Prof. McGuigan is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). He has supervised a number of postgraduate students and has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles.
