Solar Photovoltaic Research and Commercialisation in Ireland
About the event
Annual General Meeting of the Energy-Environment Division will take place at 5:30 PM and will be followed by the lecture at 6:30 PM.
This will be a combined Lecture by Professor Don MacElroy of UCD and Mazhar Bari, CEO of SolarPrint. The subject of Professor MacElroy’s talk will be the potential of Solar Energy as a renewable resource both globally and in an Irish setting. The current status of
photovoltaic (PV) technology will be briefly outlined and specific aspects of 3rd generation PV will be commented on. Additional material will be presented on selected projects conducted within the SRC which relate to chemical energy storage.
Other than short-to-medium term methods such as pumped storage, compressed air and secondary batteries, chemical energy storage is one of the very few options available to ensure adequate energy/power management over timescales spanning weeks and months (associated with each of the renewable resources wind, wave and solar).
SolarPrint is a leader in the commercialisation of dye sensitised solar cells (DSSC) which is third generation photovoltaic technology. This is a highly tuneable structure with multiple indoor and outdoor applications. SolarPrint is bringing a leading indoor energy harvesting platform to market to enable wireless sensor deployment in buildings. The business for wireless sensor applications is a multi billion-dollarmarket opportunity and is growing. SolarPrint DSSC has been validated by experts and leading multinational customers and is involved in several commercial projects.
About the speakers
Don MacElroy received his undergraduate BE and PhD degrees from UCD and in January 1982 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). He subsequently received tenure as Associate Professor at UMR in 1989. He returned to UCD in 1991 and was appointed to the Chair of Chemical Engineering in 2003. His teaching interests are in Thermodynamics, Adsorption and Chromatography, Process Control and Carbon Capture. The number of research personnel (staff and postgraduates) in the Solar Energy Conversion Cluster currently exceeds 60, and, since the inception of the SRC a little over four years ago, the group has published and presented in excess of 300 papers nationally and internationally.
Dr Mazhar Bari is the Co-founder and CEO of SolarPrint. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, BSc(HONS) in Experimental Physics from University College Dublin, and an MBA from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business. He holds several patents in new energy materials and devices. Dr Mazhar Bari has 20 years experience in nanotechnology commercialisation and innovation management.
