About the event

Decarbonisation of Irelands electricity system is one of a number of important pillars to set Ireland’s economy on a sustainable pathway.  Government has recently set out its ambition to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and this will likely require fundamental changes to the electricity system in Ireland.  If we simply continue to add more wind generation to the system as it exists today, a significant amount of the available renewable energy would be wasted / curtailed due to excess generation at times of high wind. In this talk, the results of an SEAI funded research project will be presented, which seeks to illustrate the most important system changes required to enable this volume of renewable generation on the system.

About the Speaker

Paul Blount, Chartered Engineer
Paul is a member of the senior management team in Coillte’s renewable energy business, joining the company as Portfolio Director in Jan 2019. Prior to this he was a Director of ABO Wind Ireland and has been actively involved in Wind energy development, financing, construction and operation for more than 10 years.  He is also a member of the DS3 Advisory Council and chair of IWEA’s 70by30 Committee which led the development of an evidence basis for a 70% RES-E target for Ireland.  Following the adoption of this target by Government, focus has now switched to the development of an implementation plan to deliver on this ambition.
