A Green Gas Future: Ireland’s Gas Grid and its Role in Decarbonisation, Supply Security and Cost Competitiveness

  • Date(s)
    Wednesday, 7 December 2016
  • Time(s)
    From 6:30 PM
  • Venue
    Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

About the event

The presentation will outline some of the work supported by the Gas Innovation Group (GIG), which is charged with funding R&D projects aimed at increasing the use of the natural gas grid and finding novel and sustainable supplies and demands of gas. The GIG is led by Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) and comprises members from key governmental departments and third-level institutions. The presentation will begin with an overview of the energy challenges facing Ireland and how the natural gas grid can be used to tackle them. The role of the GIG in R&D funding will be described. Finally a sample of GIG-supported projects will be briefly presented. These will range from academic research projects, such as resource studies and lab testing of raw feedstocks for renewable biomethane production, to full-scale commercial use of novel gas technologies, such as natural gas filling stations, gas driven transportation fleets and anaerobic digesters.

About the Speaker;

Dr Rory Monaghan is Lecturer of Energy Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at NUI Galway. Rory’s research interests encompass multiple aspects of thermal energy, specifically combustion and gasification of renewable fuels, low emissions combined cooling, heat and power systems, thermal comfort and air quality in indoor and urban environments, and lifecycle assessment of biomass-based energy systems. He is a member of the Gas Innovation Group, led by Gas Networks Ireland, which awards research and demonstration funding related to natural gas use, infrastructure and renewable alternative fuels. www.nuigalway.ie/therme
