The Impact of Electric Vehicles on Ireland’s Electricity System

  • Date(s)
    Thursday, 25 October 2012
  • Time(s)
    From 6:30 PM
  • Venue
Engineers Ireland, 22 Clyde Road, Dublin 4

About the event

If the sale of electric vehicles increases significantly in the next decade, and the subsequent charge point roll-out and charging behaviour is not monitored and controlled, then the impact on the Irish electricity system may be significant.

An introduction to electric vehicle and charge point types will be followed by a discussion on the micro level grid impact issues such as medium and low voltage network load management, harmonics and vehicle to home.  The talk will then progress to the macro level grid issues such as system demand control, vehicle to grid, load shedding and linking to renewables.

About the speaker

John Whelan, EV Infrastructure Engineer - ESB ecars

Since March 2010 the ESB has been installing electric vehicle charge points in homes, on-street and in service stations in an effort to support the uptake of eMobility in Ireland.  ESB is also implementing the supporting IT and payment systems which will have open accessibility for all energy supply companies and all types of electric vehicles.

John joined the ESB ecars team in April 2010 and has been involved in most aspects of the project including equipment specification, tendering, procurement, installation and commissioning.  He is also contributing to the EU funded Green eMotion and ENEVATE projects which are accelerating eMobility in Europe through knowledge sharing and standardisation.  He is a contributing member of CIGRE working group C6.20 “integration of electric vehicles into electric power systems”

Prior to his role in ESB ecars, John worked for 7 years in ESBI in areas such as overhead line design, substation design and power systems studies.  John holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from Trinity College Dublin and a Diploma in Mathematics from the Open University.
