About the event

Dr Austin Coffey, Lecturer and Principal Investigator, School of Engineering, Waterford IT will open this presentation where he will introduce special guest speaker Dr Sean Lyons.

Dr Lyons will present an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing the medical plastics industry covering aspects of production such as additive manufacturing and micromoulding new materials for bioresorbable applications in implants (e.g. stents), drug delivery devices and advances in coating technologies.

This event will also provide information on the current size of the medical plastics market in Ireland and Europe as well as offer perspectives on emerging trends and future directions.

Mr Mark Kelleher, Vice Chairman of Engineers Ireland's Biomedical division will provide the concluding remarks.

About the speaker

Dr Sean Lyons, Chartered Engineer
Dr  Lyons is the Centre Manager of the APT Technology Gateway hosted at the Materials Research Institute at Athlone IT.  As Centre Manager he is responsible for delivering and implementing the centre business plan and takes a leadership role in fostering polymer materials and manufacturing research at a national and international level, in conjunction with industrial and academic partners, World Class Researchers and funding agencies. Dr Lyons is a graduate of the Polymer Engineering programme at AIT where he also completed his PhD studies. Dr Lyons is Chairman of the Society of Plastics Engineers European Medical Polymer Division and a frequent contributor to medical industry publications such as Medical Plastics News.
