Engineering Education – ‘Best in Class’ 2017 Award

This award recognises innovation in Irish engineering education which demonstrates a real impact on student learning coupled with an actual or planned contribution to the economy. The award will be presented to the third level education institute which has demonstrated excellence in the field of engineering education. This can be through new pedagogical approaches across an entire school of engineering or a particular degree programme (or part)  which adopts new techniques that benefit learning by students, benefit to the community, student engagement and retention etc.

Please detail how your entry fits the five key criteria below (max 500 words per criterion):

1. Innovation in education
Demonstrate how your institute has introduced a new development or unique element to Irish engineering education e.g. this can include new teaching methods and/or restructuring of engineering programmes.
2. Impact of the innovation on the student and graduate community
Demonstrate how the introduction of this initiative brings a new or unique element to the student experience either through innovative learning or personal and/or community development opportunities.
3. The integration/development of campus start-ups
Outline the support available for students or graduates to engage in entrepreneurial or start up activities
4. Actual or potential contribution to the economy and society
Outline the contribution to the economy through increased revenue or jobs or in terms of student development and the contribution the graduate engineers will make to society.
5. Differentiation
Demonstrate any differentiating factors that place your initiative above others in your field e.g. promotion of diversity, investment in resources, promotion of volunteer work etc.


This category is open to all third level education institutes accredited by Engineers Ireland in the field of engineering education. An institute can enter alone or together with a partner organisation. The partner organisation cannot enter alone.

Entries should measurably demonstrate their success in the learning domain over a period of two years from 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2017.  The award category is only open to third level educational institutes which operate on the island of Ireland.

Entry submission

  • Please complete your submission online by 12 noon on Monday 11th September 2017, detailing how your entry fits the six key criteria outlined. We cannot guarantee that submissions and supporting material will be returned so please upload copies of original documentation.
  • All entry material should be carefully marked with the category, project title and name of the institute.
  • Please include an executive summary of 200 words maximum which provides a succinct description of the entry. This material is a key element in the judging process.
  • The submission may include drawings, pictures, photographs and other methods of illustration in either hard or softcopy. If you have video footage of your project available, we would also encourage you to submit this.
  • You should also submit six different colour photographs of professional presentation quality in jpg or tiff format – at least 1MB in size.
  • Entry is subject to a €250 fee

Terms and Conditions of entry

Please read the conditions of entry, eligibility criteria, entry submission and digital format information below:

  • Engineers Ireland reserves the right to publish in part or whole material contained in entries, apart from that clearly marked confidential;
  • Confidential material should be clearly marked and included only as appendices to entry submissions;
  • Entrants may be required to be available for award presentations and media interviews;
  • We cannot guarantee that submissions and supporting material will be returned so please upload copies of original documents;
  • Engineers Ireland is not responsible for any loss or damage to submissions;
  • Engineers Ireland reserves the right not to allocate an award should the quality of entries not reach a certain standard;
  • The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence concerning decisions will be entered into;
  • Information about award winners will be strictly embargoed until the announcement at the presentation evening;
  • Entries received after the published closing date will not be considered;
  • The judging panel will determine the shortlist of entries once all entries are received;
  • Only one award trophy will be presented to the winning entry.

Digital format

    The following formats can be accepted:
  • For text: .pdf, .doc
  • For pictures: .jpeg, .gif. (Ideally in print quality, at least 1MB in size).
  • For videos: .avi, .mpeg, .wmv, .mov and .fly.
  • For presentations: .pdf .ppt (ideally convert PowerPoint into pdf).
