About the event

Haulbowline Island was the location of Ireland's only steelworks which operated on the Island between 1939 and 2001. Waste from the steel production process was deposited on the Spit Bank, a shallow sand spit extending eastwards from the Naval Dockyard, from the early 1960's. This area of reclaimed foreshore became known as the East Tip. In July 2011, following an ECJ Judgement against Ireland, Cork County Council was requested to progress the regularisation of the site by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The remediation of the East Tip was substantially completed in December 2018.

Members of the Cork County Council, RPS and PJ Hegarty Project team will present an overview of how the engineering and environmental challenges presented by this unique site were overcome in a collaborative manner ensuring that this remediation project was successfully delivered at all stages from planning to construction completion.

The lecture will also include an opportunity to walk the site and experience first-hand how this significant project has transformed an environmental legacy into a landmark public amenity for Cork Harbour.
