March

Dublin City University, 4 March - 6 March

3 day programme

The programme will start with an introduction to engineering in general and the engineering courses and facilities available at Dublin City University. The students will then take part in a disintegration project - where they will learn how a product is designed by taking it apart an examining how it is put together. Students will also work on DCU's "Green Power" race car. The students will work on assembling and disassembling portions of the race car and identifying and measuring key components. On the second day students will use the SolidWorks computer aided design system to design an engineering component and will then manufacture this component using a 3D printer. Students will learn about pneumatics and control in DCU's state of the art pneumatics laboratory and will build circuits using industrial components. On the final day students will go on a field trip to our industrial partners site to see how a large multinational engineering company functions and to get an insight into the day-to-day life of an engineer working in industry. The programme will conclude with a tour of DCU campus and a Q&A session.

The UL EYF programme will introduce students to Engineering programmes in the School of Engineering and Department of Electronics & Computer Engineering.  The programme will include a visit to the Explore Engineering Showcase in Shannon Airport on afternoon/evening 7 March.

Fees for this 5-day experience will be €35. Students attending a DEIS school will not be charged a fee.

 

Viatris Damastown, 5 March - 8 March

4 day experience.

Viatris Damastown will host an exciting Transition Year experience with Le Cheile Secondary School, Dublin 15. The experience will include engineering project/quizzes/prizes /tours/demonstrations/guest speakers. Applications from Le Cheile Secondary School only.

Viatris Northern Cross, 5 March - 7 March

This programme will only accept students from Belmayne Educate Together Secondary School and Chanel College

The STEPS TY Engineering Your Future experience at Viatris Northern Cross will include a Laboratory tour, Device demonstration, CAD demonstration, a mini project activity and interactive workshops. Quizzes, games, prizes and snacks over the three days. After the success of our programme in 2023 we are excited to receive applications for our 2024 programme. 

There will be no fee for this experience.

 

Viatris Dublin Respiratory/ MDR, 5 March - 7 March

3 day experience

Viatris - Dublin Respiratory are looking forward to hosting a Steps EYF experience in March 2024 where Transition year students will get to work with our Engineers from all different departments around our busy site. The students will get to work on projects with our engineers and get tours of our facility, including lab, warehouse and manufacturing tours. They will get exposure to all different parts of our work to understand how engineering works with all different departments to create our products. After the success of our programme in 2023, We are excited to receive the applications for our 2024 experience!  Applications only from Portmarnock Community School and Mercy College in Coolock please. 

There will be no fee for this experience.

 

Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, 5 March - 7 March

The TCD proposed STEPS EYF programme will comprise of a combination of hands-on engineering workshops, a site visit, talks hosted by the School of Engineering, as well as a campus tour.

Viatris Cork, 5th-7th March

3 day experience

An action packed 3 days where students will learn about the history of Viatris Little Island, what we do, how our medicines help people worldwide and why they should consider a career in Pharma in the future. Subject Matter Experts in every department will organise fun activities and challenges in the labs, operations area, engineering and automation and health & safety. There will be a fact filled site tour as well as a project provided and hosted by a member of the Rediscovery Workshop and a visit from the Engineers Ireland Chair.

This experience is only open to students from Nagle Community College in Mahon Cork City. There will be no fees for this experience.  

  

Viatris (Mylan Teoranta) Galway, 6 - 8 March

3 day experience

Viatris Galway will host an exciting 3-day experience during Seachtain Na Gaelige for Transition Year students from Coláiste Cholmcille, Inverin, Co Galway. The Viatris Galway STEM experience will include: an intro into Viatris Galway and our presence in Connemara, site tours/demonstrations from R&D, labs, production/Employee Speakers- "Pathway to career in Science", Rediscovery Centre workshop on Sustainable Engineering along with some fun quizzes and prizes !

ATU Sligo, 6 March - 8 March

The STEPS Engineering Your Future Programme at ATU Sligo will include Campus tours, hands on activities and labs. There will be an introduction to Robotics and you will learn how to design, build and program your own robot.

Palliare, 20 March - 22 March

Palliare is an Irish Biomedical Device company, based in Galway, working on researching and developing advanced technologies for Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgeries starting from initial concept design and bringing into the market. Our goal is to enhance the safety of Surgical Procedure and the Operating Room by working closely with leading surgeons and medical professionals in hospitals .As part of the STEPS Programme, we at Palliare, would like to give you the opportunity to meet out Engineering Team and experience Biomedical Engineering in action. We have an exciting programme planned for you, which will run over the course of three days and will include interactive tours of our labs, live demonstrations of our surgical products in operation, encouraging career/design process talks from our engineering team, hands-on engineering design challenger and fun quizzes with prizes to be won!

Munster Technological University (MTU), Kerry Campus (REEdI), 29 April - 1 May

This three day experience will introduce students to life on campus in MTU Kerry as an engineering student. Activities will include a campus tour, Lean Manufacturing Introduction & Games, 3D Printing, Robotics Workshop, Design an Ideal Engineer Class, Visit to a local Engineering Company, Immersive Technology Session and visit to the Kerry Scifest Exhibition.

Fees for this 3-day experience will be €25. Students attending a DEIS school will not be charged a fee.

  

Fingleton White, 29 April - 2 May

4 day programme

The 2024 Fingleton White Transition Year Programme, held in  Portlaoise aims to give students a broad overview of the world of engineering and demonstrate the endless opportunities a degree in engineering provides: Some of the highlights of the programme are:  Presentations and workshops on topics such as wind and solar energy, natural gas, water and engineering design. Run through of exciting real world projects with Fingleton White's engineers. Hands on experiments demonstrating the principles of engineering,  Q&A Sessions with engineers from a range of disciplines including mechanical, electrical, civil and chemical, Information on the pathway to Engineering and an overview of college courses from recent college graduates.

Fees for this 4-day experience will be €30. Students attending a DEIS school will not be charged a fee.

 

Combilift, 29 April - 3 May

5 day programme

Combilift are hosting a programme for Transition Year Students to experience the “Life of an Engineer” in a fast-paced working environment. This event will give student’s an insight into work as future Engineers/Technicians.

Students will develop an understanding of various Manufacturing and Engineering Processes and learn about the wide range of opportunities Combilift has to offer.  During the event, students will receive a tour of Combilift’s state of the art Manufacturing site, participate in hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and conclude their visit with a Combilift Quiz.  Students will also get the opportunity to listen to “A Day in the Life” of some of our current Apprentices, Trainees and Engineers. These talks will entail why they chose a career in Engineering and what they enjoy most about working in Combilift.

TU Dublin is once again delighted to welcome transition year students to a packed programme of engineering activities spread across our three campuses in Blanchardstown, Tallaght and City Centre. You will make new friends as you  learn all about engineering. You will also learn about the many pathways to an engineering career available from Ireland's premier Technological University.

DBFL Consulting Engineers, 10 April - 12 April

3 Day Programme

DBFL will be offering a 3-day programme with a range of hands-on activities bringing students through real-life projects, giving them a real feel for the day-to-day role of a civil, structural or transportation engineer. Students will have access to a team of engineers to answer their questions and challenge them over the three days. An opportunity to experience these three disciplines in a fun and friendly environment.

University of Galway, 10 April - 12 April

3 day programme

This 3-day STEPS EYF event will feature hands-on workshops and interactive talks about engineering. Engineers are tinkerers and creative problem solvers. Today’s engineers work on a wide range of problems which includes designing bridges, coding self driving cars, designing implants, and combating climate change. The workshops and talks will give insight into how engineers use creativity, math and science to find exciting solutions to the worlds most challenging problems. Sessions will focus on mechanical, civil, electrical, biomedical, and energy systems engineering.

Fees for this 3-day experience will be €25. Students attending a DEIS school will not be charged a fee.

This three-day experience will give Transition Year students the opportunity to learn more about apprentices with Liebherr and an insight into the opportunities afforded by a career in engineering. The event will feature hands-on workshops and live demonstrations. Students will get a tour of the facility, meet apprentices and hear from existing apprentices and engineers who went through the apprentice route. All activities will have a strong hands-on, practical engagement emphasis where possible.

The Environmental Protection Agency, 16 April - 18 April

3 Day Programme

Participants in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Transition Year week will get a glimpse inside the EPA’s Wexford headquarters, meet scientists and engineers who monitor our environment, learn about climate change and climate action, and experience how the EPA monitors pollution, rivers, and even radiation. With hands on-demonstrations at the micro level and talks from experts working at the global level, students will understand how science and engineering play a key part in preserving and improving our environment.

TUS Midlands, Athlone, 22 April - 24 April

TUS Midlands, Athlone Campus have a fantastic three day schedule planned for Transition Year students in April. The students will get an introduction in the variety of engineering disciplines studied at TUS Midlands including: Mechanical and Polymer, Digital engineering, Electronic, Computer & Software, Structural and Civil engineering. There will be a tour of the campus, Rediscovery Centre Workshop on Sustainable Engineering Design, and many hands on activities and lab work.

Cundall Ireland Ltd, 23 - 25 April

Cundall (Ireland) LTD are a multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy in the heart of Dublin City Centre. Located on Dawson St they offer a wide range of consultancy and design services including; Building Services, Critical Systems, Structural, Civil, Geotechnical, Fire, Security and Sustainability engineering.

In our programme they will show day to day experience of what its like to be an engineer in the construction industry with hands on design challenges and talks from some of their engineers.

Sessions will run for 10am to 3 pm daily. Participants will engage with the main disciplines of engineering; civil, energy, automation, electrical, electronic, mechanical and manufacturing. Dundalk Institute of Technology, 7 May - 10 May

4 day programme

Students will receive an initial induction and icebreakers session for a half day. Over the following three days, the programme will  provide the student with an exposure to mechanical, civil and electronics engineering activities in a group environment. Activities will include 3D printing, mechanical build and programming of a robot arm kit and a bridge building / surveying exercise. The importance of teamwork, design and sustainability to each discipline will also feature. The programme will finish with a feedback session and reflection on the week's achievements.

Participating students will have the opportunity to partake in activities and gain experience in multiple disciplines of engineering. Students will spend time in the Department of Built Environment (Civil & Structural Engineering, Architecture, Surveying) followed by the Department of Aerospace, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering. All activities will have a strong hands-on, practical engagement emphasis where possible.

The UCD Engineering Your Future experience, hosted by the UCD College of Engineering & Architecture and supported by STEPS, offers TY students 5 days of  content and the opportunity to:

  • Chat with our current Engineering Students about their UCD Experience 
  • Hear from recent graduates and guest speakers about their careers
  • Engage through lectures, demonstrations, workshops, design exercises, projects and challenges
  • Take a Tour of the UCD Campus with our Student Ambassadors

Electronic Engineering Department, Maynooth University, 14 May - 16 May

3 day programme

The world of electronic engineering covers a vast array of areas- from the smallest of signals to the largest of machines! You can find electronic engineering everywhere! In the Maynooth EI TY week participants can experience all aspects of electronic engineering from circuit building, to signal generator and manipulations and even some robotic building! Students will get the opportunity to visit out anechoic chamber, learn how software lets us interact with the world and how interesting it is to teach robots how to do even the simplest of things! All this can only be accomplished by means of team work, problem solving, ingenuity, innovation and determination. Can you become the next big thing in Electronic Engineering? Come visit the electronic engineering department in Maynooth if you think you are!

Munster Technological University, Cork Campus, 8 May - 10 May

Three day programme

Munster Technology Universities (MTU) Engineering Your Futureis a hands-on programme for Transition Year students, designed to introduce them to the exciting and diverse world of engineering. The programme gives the students an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the skills required of engineers and the career opportunities available to qualified engineers.  Students are also given the opportunity to develop skills in areas such as critical thinking, problem solving and design, creativity.

The 3 day programme encompasses a range of activities which include industry visits, hands-on workshops, presentations and project work. Students will interact with current and graduate students at various stages of their engineering career and meet with staff from the Faculty of Engineering & Science at Munster Technological University, Cork Campus.

This programme will be in person. Fee for this programme will be €25. Students attending a DEIS school will not be charged a fee.
