Practical Temperature Measurement and Calibration (CT004)

Organisation profile

National Metrology Laboratory (NML), a division of NSAI is the national metrology institute for Ireland and is responsible for establishing, maintaining and developing the national measurement standards for physical quantities and their dissemination to Irish users. In addition to maintaining the national measurement standards NML provides a calibration service in a range of areas and also delivers training in measurement-related activities.

Training aim

CT004 provides the knowledge and expertise for those who use temperature measuring devices or require an appreciation of the practical aspects of temperature measurement and calibration.

Learning objectives

Attendees will obtain a comprehensive knowledge of temperature measurement and calibration techniques, including the properties of different types of thermometers, how to calibrate each type and sources of error during calibration. They will also learn of the quality requirements associated with temperature calibration and obtain a general knowledge of the theory behind temperature measurement and the definition of the kelvin (SI unit for temperature).

Course outline

• Principles of Temperature Measurement and Calibration • Temperature Units, terminology, traceability and standards • Thermometer Types: Thermocouples, Liquid in Glass thermometers, Platinum Resistance Thermometers and Thermistors • Accuracy of Thermometers • Temperature Mediums: Liquid Baths, Dry Blocks, Ovens • Thermometer usage, selection & application - Sources of errors • In-house calibration methods i.e. profiles in ovens.
Tuition consists of classroom work, exercises & practical sessions
